The Jazz Cruise 2013 Lineup Is Announced
First-time performers on The Jazz Cruise include legends such as Phil Woods, Gary Burton, Byron Stripling and Eddie Palmieri as well as some of the most well known groups and musicians in the genre, including New York Voices, Wayne Bergeron, David Finck, Jimmy Greene, Sean Jones, Dennis Wilson and Steve Wilson.
Returning from prior cruises are some of our most favorite performers ever. The Jazz Cruise is proud to once again present Kurt Elling, Ann Hampton Callaway, Clayton Brothers, Houston Person, Freddy Cole and Tommy Igoe Sextet, all of whom sailed with us on The Jazz Cruise 2012. We are also very excited to be able to bring back some cruise veterans who have not sailed with us recently, including the amazing Arturo Sandoval, organist Joey De Francesco and vocalist Karrin Allyson.
Music Director Shelly Berg is back to weave his magic in terms of scheduling and programming and will also perform in both Anita’s Big Band and several All Star sets. The All Stars will feature cruise stalwarts and virtuoso performers Wycliffe Gordon and Ken Peplowski. Wycliffe will, of course, host the Gospel Show, and Ken is scheduled, once again, to plan our Opening Show, which is rapidly becoming a staple of the cruise programming. Other All Stars include Bill Cunliffe, Jay Leonhart and those Anita’s Big Band members selected by Shelly. Randy Brecker and Anat Cohen will be featured as both All Stars and Big Band performers, as will Jeff Hamilton, possibly the greatest big band drummer alive, who has agreed to perform in some of the big band sets. That should be something very special.
Speaking of Anita’s Big Band, we are fortunate that John Fedchock will return as the leader/director of that amazing group. As mentioned above, John has infused some new musicians to his solid core of John Allred, Randy Brecker, Pete Christlieb, Anat Cohen, Bruce Forman (Cow Bop), Joe La Barbera, Dick Oatts, Andy Martin, Gary Smulyan and Jennifer Wharton. Guest vocalists will participate in the performances and the Formal Night Big Band Dance will again be a feature of that very special night.
So that we can eliminate the flood of e-mails asking this question, Comedian Alonzo Bodden…our Jazz Comedian in Residence…will be back so plan now not to sit in the front row!
And, of course, the omnipresent TJC House Rhythm Section of Shelly Berg, Tom Kennedy and Ernie Adams and our wunderkind Emmet Cohen Trio will be sailing and popping up almost every day in some form or fashion.
There will be our customary schedule of interviews, special musical performances, dancing and parties. You do not want to miss The Jazz Cruise 2013!
